Jay Bankroll

It All Started Back In 2020....

Jay and I were just casually playing video games during the dreadful pandemic. While we were queued up waiting for games, we would be in a Zoom call where he'd share his screen and show me how he'd make beats on FL Studio as well as mix music on Logic. I had told him earlier at school I had a passion for music so I was always intrigued to see how everything worked.

He said that none of his music seemed to sound as quality as what's on the radio. This was especially due to the unideal locations he was recording in (closets, kitchens, etc.). So we started a mini studio in Ajax together, only to record his music, so that we can get used to the process and learn the ins and outs of what it takes to make a good song.

We put up tons of cheap acoustic foam from Amazon, recording from his bedroom. We were rocking a basic set up with the Focusrite 2i2, KRK Monitors and TLM 103 mic. I was tracking him through a cheap windows computer, definitely not the best start in terms of gear. Although the mic was really good, we found the mic is just one small component of a large chain. The vocals were, to say the least, awful. We went through a few studio "prototypes" during this time.

Our Setup in 2020

Our Setup in 2021

Our Setup Start of 2022

Those were some very humble beginnings but it was very necessary for us to go through that initial struggle. Over those years we worked hard at learning what it takes to get the best quality vocal, what gear would work the best, how to quickly track vocals, everything music related. Although Jay had been producing and mixing since 2017, he did not like the low quality music he was putting out. Naturally, the next best move would be for us to take it to a professional studio.

And thats exactly what we did, I went a few times with him to a couple of different studios to show support but to also get a better idea of what the pro engineers do. He went solo to nearly 10 studios in total, multiple times at each, some were home studios, some were studios attended by many superstars, some were even outside of North America! It's safe to say him and I gathered a ton of info during those sessions and felt motivated to take what we learned to the next level.

Jay at a professional studio, mid-2021

Although we were able to get some good recordings using some top quality gear, we felt there was still a lot missing; we found that a lot of the studios we went to were lacking the specific gear which top artists use the most. Mixing-wise we always preferred Jay's own mixes compared to what was shown by the studios. A lot of the times it seemed like the engineers didn't really care all too much about the artist and their song, the mastering seemed very lifeless. Some of the pricing was stupid expensive as well, only to end up with lacklustre recordings/mixing.

Altogether, even from the better studios of the bunch, the experiences were quite disappointing. July 26, 2022 is when we decided to finally take matters into our own hands. With my tracking experience and vast Pro Tools knowledge combined with Jay's extensive  mixing, mastering and production experience, we decided to give it a go.

Setting Up

Slight Upgrade

First Session

Now we we had the dedicated space and summer was still going so we could really dial in. We invested in a bunch of new gear and did a ton of trial and error before our opening. It took us a few months just to make sure we had everything set up right in terms of our booth, our speakers, our pre-amps, etc. A lot of research was done to make sure, no matter the cost, we could get the best quality vocals. No more crappy closet vocals, we were striving for perfection. We ended up with some of the best equipment to ever be created for music creation.

Dec 10th, 2023 was our opening day. A very quiet one, however, that quickly changed as more and more artists started to realize the power of our studio and mixes. Since then we've worked with Juno Award winners, artists with over 1 million+ streams, producers who've made beats for some of your favourite artists, gotten over 25+ 5 star reviews on Google, the list goes on! We are grateful that we went this route and really put the work and time in to make sure we did it right, as quality is key for us, and we're glad that you can experience that quality with us. Anyone can make it in the industry if they are consistent and put out quality. Thank you for taking this journey with us and we can't wait to work with you to the top
